In September 2004, Grand Cayman faced one of its most significant challenges – Hurricane Ivan.
With devastating winds and unprecedented damage, the island needed more than power; it needed hope and resilience.

In the aftermath of the storm, CUC sprang into action.
Working tirelessly around the clock to restore power and ensure the safety of our community. Our dedicated team, with the support of local and international partners, executed a monumental recovery effort. Within weeks, the lights began to flicker back on, bringing not only power but also a sense of normalcy and security to the island.

What is CUC doing to promote sustainability in the Cayman Islands?
As the Cayman Islands transitions to renewable energy, CUC is dedicated to projects that align with the revised Cayman Islands National Energy Policy (“NEP”) 2024-2045. Our goals include reducing our carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, and providing reliable, clean energy to our community.

How is CUC reducing its carbon footprint?
We are committed to greening our grid, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and increasing renewable energy to 70% of total electricity generated by 2037. In the commitment to greening the grid, projects like the life cycle upgrade to 5 of the CUC engines will enable the life of the engines to be extended and allow for better fuel efficiency. The battery energy storage system (BESS) allow for 20 MW of energy to be stored and used for generating power rather than the diesel engines. This project alone has an estimate cost savings of 5-6% in fuel savings.
